Squirrels
There are three squirrels that are prominent in this area of the country: flying
squirrels, grey tree squirrels, and fox squirrels.  While all three eat nuts and
berries, flying squirrels are the most carnivorous. Their diet consists of bird eggs,
nestling, insects, and other animal matter that may be available.  Flying squirrels
can glide up to 150 feet when weather conditions are right!  Flying squirrels are
extremely active and very social, nesting with other flying squirrels and sometimes
screech owls and bats.  All squirrels have a tendency to gnaw.  Squirrels like to nest
in residential homes and gnaw insulation and wire casings.  An exposed wire could
cause a fire...Squirrels are carriers of many parasites and diseases including: fleas,
ticks, mites, bot fly larvae, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mt. spotted
fever, lyme disease, relapsing fever, rabies, hantavirus, and the plague!
